When SARS requests supporting documents for verification, the process can take up to 21 business days, provided all required documents are uploaded correctly. During this period, SARS might also request additional documents, which could extend the verification timeframe.
What to Expect During SARS Verification
- Receiving a Verification Letter
SARS will send you a letter indicating the specific documents they need. These may include payslips, medical aid certificates, IRP5 forms, or any other relevant documentation. You can upload your documents through SARS eFiling or the SARS Online Query System. If you’re submitting the documents at a SARS branch, ensure you include your verification letter, which contains a unique barcode that links your submission to your tax records. More details are available here. - Uploading Documents
Make sure to submit your documents in the correct format (e.g., .pdf, .jpg, .docx), with each document being no larger than 5 MB. You can upload up to 20 documents. Once you’ve uploaded everything, click the “Submit” button. If you miss this step, your documents won’t be sent to SARS. Also, be careful to submit the correct documents, as once the link closes, you won’t be able to make changes. - SARS Response Time
SARS aims to verify your documents within 21 business days. However, this timeframe could be extended if additional information is required or if there are other processing delays. Keep in mind, if you’re due a refund, it will only be processed after the verification is complete. If SARS finds discrepancies in your return, they may issue a revised assessment and could apply penalties for under-declaration, which can be as high as 200% of the underpaid tax. Learn more about verification vs. audit processes here. - Possible Delays
There are several factors that can delay the processing of your refund, such as incomplete document submissions, discrepancies in your return, or the need for further clarification. In such cases, the process could extend beyond the usual 21-day period. For a deeper understanding of these delays, visit this link. - Difference Between Verification and Audit
It’s important to note that a verification is not the same as an audit. A verification involves checking the submitted documentation against your tax return, while an audit is a more in-depth examination of your tax affairs, which can take much longer. An audit could take months depending on its complexity. Read more about the differences and typical timelines here.
